Stitch strength testing

Statics-based analysis

The type of stitch used to join two pieces of fabric plays a critical role in determining the final product's performance and durability. Stitches serve various functions, from allowing flexibility and stretch to adding decorative elements. When designing soft goods, such as backpacks, clothing, and seating, selecting the appropriate stitch is essential for enhancing both aesthetics and functionality.

Given that these products endure regular wear and tear, designers must carefully consider which stitch types can provide the greatest seam resilience.

To inform these decisions, five of the most common stitches were tested and analyzed using static mechanics diagrams and weight testing to determine their respective strengths.
